A Guide To Using A Car Accident Compensation Calculator
A road traffic accident can lead to serious and debilitating injuries that could greatly affect how you’re able to live your life. Depending on the impact caused by the other driver or drivers, your injuries could range from suffering broken fingers or a broken hand to a neck injury or facial injury.
People seek car accident compensation for when they’ve been injured in an accident that they feel wasn’t their fault, and our calculator can help clarify certain things for you.
Our car accident injury compensation calculator quickly and simply breaks down the claims process so you can have a clear and concise estimate in a matter of minutes. It gives you a better understanding of what you can claim and gives you a bracket regarding the amount of compensation you could receive.
It simply asks you to clarify what injuries you’ve suffered, how you suffered them and what, if any, financial losses you’d like to claim due to the injury.

What Are Car Accidents?
A car accident is when two cars collide on the road. It can also involve a single vehicle crashing into something like a tree or bollard. Concerning making a claim, however, you must be able to show that you’re at least only partially responsible, as you wouldn’t be able to claim if you’re solely liable for the damage, say if you drove into a tree because you were texting someone.
This is because the reason you’re making a personal injury claim is due to not being responsible for the injury and damage you’ve suffered. That’s why we seek compensation; to gain sufficient payment for the fact that we’ve been negatively impacted by an event that was not our fault.
What Damages Could You Claim For After A Car Accident?
There are two potential heads of claim when making a personal injury claim. General damages relate to the physical pain, mental anguish and general decline in your quality of life caused by the injury. Special damages, meanwhile, relate to the financial losses caused by the injury. This means that you could claim for such things as:
- Loss of earnings
- Loss of future earnings
- Travel costs
- Medicine/prescriptions
- Recreational activities that you can no longer commit to.
One thing to bear in mind: you will need evidence to prove the financial losses you’re claiming. Our panel of No Win No Fee solicitors will request this information to help build your case. Therefore, even if you receive general damages compensation, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll receive all or even some of the special damages you’re requesting. This is because they are judged independently based on the evidence provided.
With this in mind, you might be unsure how much compensation for a car accident your injuries could attract. A calculator can help you with this. If you want to call our advisors, they offer free legal advice and can be contacted using the phone number at the top of this page.
Common Causes Of Car Accidents
Due to the sheer number of road users, the severity of injury caused in a car accident can vary wildly. This is partly based on the circumstances surrounding the accident itself and the manner of the collision.
The Highway Code is a set of guidelines that every road user needs to follow. It’s a series of rules designed to keep road users safe and, if you break these rules, you breach your duty of care to others on the road.
Due to this, you could, at the very least, be putting other drivers at risk and, in many instances, be breaking the law. This section will highlight instances in which you would be able to claim due to someone else breaching their duty of care.
Accidents In A Car Park
Collisions in car parks usually revolve around drivers having to manoeuvre their vehicles in tight spaces and misjudging either the angle or the space they have to work with. They can also happen following a failure to look and signal properly.
Injuries in these spaces tend to be on the minor side of the scale simply because vehicles tend to slow when attempting to park. However, it doesn’t change the fact that you would still have every right to claim if you were negatively impacted by a collision in a car park that wasn’t your fault. Examples of this include:
- A driver reversing into your vehicle due to misjudging the angle when driving out of a parking space, resulting in you suffering a neck or cheekbone injury.
- A side collision caused by a driver turning a corner and not reacting in time due to driving too quickly. This could therefore result in you suffering a broken wrist.
- Rear-end collisions can also be an issue in car parks due to drivers waiting for parking spaces. A collision of this nature due to a driver slamming into you could result in you suffering a broken nose.
Collisions From The Side
Collisions from the side can be very painful and cause life-changing injuries because of your own vulnerability to these types of accidents. If the collision occurs on your side of the vehicle, you could, effectively, only have a door to protect you.
If another road user is driving towards you at speed, you may suffer injuries resulting in you wanting to use a car accident personal injury compensation calculator. Instances where this type of collision could cause injuries include:
- Suffering a broken cheekbone due to a driver ignoring a red light and slamming into you when using a junction.
- A motorcyclist swerving into you due to them speeding, which causes you to suffer a broken hand and broken wrist.
- Suffering from a head injury because a vehicle swerved into you while committing an illegal manoeuvre on a roundabout. This could lead to you wanting to claim on a No Win No Fee basis.
Head-On Collisions
Injuries from head-on collisions can be particularly difficult to deal with as they can involve at least one vehicle colliding at speed. The types of injuries you could suffer from a road traffic accident could lead you to want to use a compensation calculator for car accident injuries.
It could take months of recovery to feel fully comfortable behind the wheel due to the trauma caused. This is something important to note – it isn’t just physical injuries that are considered during your case; any psychological trauma caused will also be considered.
If you decide to use someone from our panel of No Win No Fee solicitors, they will review all aspects of the collision and its effects on you to build the strongest case possible.
Examples of these types of collisions include:
- A driver slamming their vehicle into yours due to them drink-driving – the resulting injuries could lead you to use a compensation payout calculator.
- Suffering a broken foot because of a motorcyclist skidding and crashing into your car at speed.
- Suffering a facial injury and neck injury due to a high-speed collision caused by the other driver being under the influence of drugs.
Rear-End Impacts And Crashes
Rear-end impacts are usually the fault of the person that has instigated the crash, which is the vehicle that crashes into the back of the one in front. The logic is that the vehicle behind needs to constantly be aware of what the vehicle in front is doing and, as such, be able to react accordingly.
They can still lead to you or your passengers suffering serious injuries. Examples of these include:
- Driving up to a red light and the driver behind not paying attention, causing them to slam their brakes too late and crash into you. This could lead to you using a car accident compensation calculator.
- The driver behind you speeding and, as a result, crashing into you.
- While on the motorway, the driver behind changing lanes at an inappropriate speed and, as such, slamming into you.
Accidents At Roundabouts And Junctions
Due to the sheer number of road users and the complexity of some roundabouts, it’s easy to see why collisions can occur on them. Collisions on roundabouts could end up involving multiple cars, which adds to the potential risk of negligent driving is involved.
The impact and damage you’ve suffered will affect the amount you could receive regarding compensation for a car accident. A calculator can help clarify this. Examples of incidents at roundabouts that you could claim for include:
- Suffering a cheekbone injury and wrist injury due to a car pulling out into the roundabout at the wrong time.
- A car swerving into you due to the driver panicking and realising they were turning at the wrong exit. Due to the sudden nature of the manoeuvre, it could lead to you suffering broken fingers, a broken foot and a broken leg.
- A motorcyclist mistiming when to turn into an exit, resulting in you suffering a broken nose and broken cheekbone. This could lead to you using a car accident personal injury compensation calculator.
Car Crash And Road Safety Statistics
The Department for Transport collects statistics from road traffic accidents across the UK. Above is the passenger casualty rates through either being killed or seriously injured based on the mode of transport from 2017 to 2019 per billion passenger-kilometres.
Based on these figures, they clearly show that you are more likely to be involved in some form of a road traffic accident that results in a casualty if you’re in a car compared to being driven or driving in a bus, coach or van.
This highlights the potential reasons why a car accident compensation calculator could be important. Alternatively, if you’d like free legal advice, please call our advisors using the phone number at the top of your screen.
Compensation For Car Accidents – How Long Do I Have To Claim?
As with any type of personal injury claim, when seeking compensation for car accidents, there is a limitation period. Essentially, this is the time period you have to start a claim. The Limitation Act 1980 sets out the time limit as three years from when the accident occurred.
However, the time limit to claim for an injury in an accident may start later if you didn’t become aware of the injuries until a later date. For example, psychological injuries, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), may not affect you until after the car accident. The time limit begins from the date of knowledge, which may be the date your car accident injuries were diagnosed.
Additionally, in certain circumstances, the time limit is frozen. For example:
- If a child is injured, they may only represent themselves in a claim for car injury compensation from their 18th birthday
- If someone is not mentally capable of making their own decisions, the time limit is suspended indefinitely unless they recover
In both circumstances above, a litigation friend may begin a claim on behalf of the minor or the person who lacks the mental capacity. Our advisors can offer more information on litigation friends. Get in touch for free legal advice.

Regarding car accident compensation, it’s worth showing the amounts you could receive for specific injuries to better understand how the process works. Below is a list of injuries and their respective compensation brackets. The Judicial College has provided them.
Injury Severity Compensation Bracket Details
Clavicle Fracture £4,830 to £11,490 The level awarded will depend on the extent of the fracture, level of disability, residual symptoms, and whether temporary or permanent.
Pelvis and Hips Severe £73,580 to £122,860 Extensive fractures of the pelvis involving, for example, dislocation of a low back joint and a ruptured bladder or a hip injury resulting in spondylolisthesis of a low back joint with intolerable pain and necessitating spinal fusion.
Leg Fracture Up to £11,110 Simple fractures of the tibia or fibula or soft tissue injuries. For an injury in the top bracket, the injury will be a simple fracture of tibia or fibula where there are some ongoing minor symptoms, such as dull aching and modest restriction.
Eye Minor £3,710 to £8,200 Injuries from such things as being struck in the eye, exposure to fumes including smoke, or being splashed by liquids causing initial pain and some temporary interference with vision.
Eye Loss In the region of £252,180 Total blindness.
Face Severe £27,940 to £91,350 Higher bracket is usually for relatively young claimants where the cosmetic effect is very disfiguring and the psychological reaction severe.
Foot Loss £158,970 to £189,110 Amputation of both feet.
Brain Moderate £140,870 to £205,580 Moderate to severe intellectual deficit, a personality change, an effect on sight, speech and sense with a high risk of epilepsy and no prospect of employment.
Back Severe £85,470 to £151,070 Damage to the spinal cord and nerve roots, leading to a combination of very serious consequences not normally found in cases of back injury.
Brain Less severe £14,380 to £40,410 The injured person will make a good recovery and will take part in social life and be able to return to work. There could still be persisting issues, like poor concentration and memory.
One thing to bear in mind: if your injuries are worth £5,000 or less, you would need to follow the rules set out by The Whiplash Injury Regulations 2021 to see if you can receive compensation. As such, the compensation brackets provided by The Judicial College would not apply in these cases.

FAQs On Car Accident Compensation Claims
For answers to frequently asked questions involving car accident compensation, please read below.
What is the average payout for a car accident in the UK?
It’s difficult to provide an average payout as it depends on the severity of the injury and how it negatively impacted your life. For more information on how general damages compensation is calculated, visit the Judicial College website.
How are accident settlements calculated?
There are two potential heads of claim when making a personal injury claim. General damages relate to the physical damage, emotional turmoil and decline to your quality of life caused by, for example, the head injury from the accident. This compensation can then be supplemented by special damages compensation. Both potential amounts you could receive are calculated by the courts.
Could you claim for a child injured in a car accident?
Yes, you could, depending on how the injury occurred, by being your child’s litigation friend. For more advice on how to do this, our advisors would be more than happy to help.
Do you get paid for pain and suffering from a car accident?
If your claim is successful, you do. This will fall under providing you with general damages compensation as the pain and suffering are one of the considerations. Our car accident compensation calculator breaks down the amounts of compensation you could receive. Alternatively, you could give us a call using the phone number at the top of this page.
